I ran across an interesting article on the scriptural inaccuracy of Christmas carol lyrics. I will dig into some of these and summarize them for three posts.

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild

No one has ever considered childbirth to be calm or silent.

Joy to the world the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

This is not inaccurate but was written as a hymn glorifying Christ’s triumphant return at the end of the age instead of a Christmas carol.

Let these words from O Little Town of Bethlehem be our prayer today:
O holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us, we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in
Be born to us today.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

I ran across an interesting article on the scriptural inaccuracy of Christmas carol lyrics. I will dig into some of these and summarize them for three posts.

We three kings of orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star

There is nothing in scripture about their being three of them and nothing about them being kings. They were wise men looking for a “child who has been born king of the Jews.”

Away in a manger
No crib for His bed
…
The cattle are lowing
The poor Baby wakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes

To say that baby Jesus never cried is to deny his humanity. See Hebrews 2:14-17 where it states that Jesus was “fully human in every way.”

It came upon the midnight clear
That glorious song of old
From angels bending near the earth
To touch their harps of gold

There is no place in scripture where it says angels play harps. This song never mentions the name of Jesus. It was written my a Unitarian pastor (Unitarians do not believe in the divinity of Jesus).

I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas day, on Christmas day;
I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas day in the morning.

Bethlehem is land-locked so no ships would sail there.

The First Noel, the Angels did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter’s night that was so deep

It wasn’t a cold winter’s night. Only tradition places it in December.

I thought this was interesting…

The problem with some grammar rules from the perspective of modern linguistics is that there is not one absolute grammar in the English language. Most American native English speakers equate standard English with being correct and any non-standard variation of English with being incorrect.

In reality, however, the concept of standard American English is really the privileging of a particular dialect of English that originates from the Ohio River Valley. This is the dialect of English that the anchors of the nightly news speak and that we base our notions of correct and incorrect grammar on. It is important to recognize that no grammar is any more correct or incorrect than any other on a functional level, and our notions of correct and incorrect are culturally constructed.

a cup is a concave vessel for drinking from, usually made of opaque material
She poured the coffee into the cup.
The lemonade filled the paper cup to the brim.
Styrofoam cups insulate you hand from the hot chocolate.

a glass is a vessel from which one drinks, especially one made of glass, plastic, or similar translucent or semi-translucent material.
You are usually served a glass of ice water in a restaurant.
He watched the chocolate syrup swirl as it was stirred into the milk in the glass.
