Inaccurate lyrics in Christmas carols – Part 3

Posted on Saturday, December 25, 2010 in Uncategorized

I ran across an interesting article on the scriptural inaccuracy of Christmas carol lyrics. I will dig into some of these and summarize them for three posts.

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild

No one has ever considered childbirth to be calm or silent.

Joy to the world the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

This is not inaccurate but was written as a hymn glorifying Christ’s triumphant return at the end of the age instead of a Christmas carol.

Let these words from O Little Town of Bethlehem be our prayer today:
O holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us, we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in
Be born to us today.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
