Inaccurate lyrics in Christmas carols – Part 2
I ran across an interesting article on the scriptural inaccuracy of Christmas carol lyrics. I will dig into some of these and summarize them for three posts.
We three kings of orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star
There is nothing in scripture about their being three of them and nothing about them being kings. They were wise men looking for a “child who has been born king of the Jews.”
Away in a manger
No crib for His bed
…
The cattle are lowing
The poor Baby wakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes
To say that baby Jesus never cried is to deny his humanity. See Hebrews 2:14-17 where it states that Jesus was “fully human in every way.”
It came upon the midnight clear
That glorious song of old
From angels bending near the earth
To touch their harps of gold
There is no place in scripture where it says angels play harps. This song never mentions the name of Jesus. It was written my a Unitarian pastor (Unitarians do not believe in the divinity of Jesus).
